The Garmin Approach S6 is definitely the best golf GPS watch that we’ve tested. It combines a touchscreen with hole maps in an overhead view which allows you to see the distance to any point on the golf course or specific hole. We have to admit that when we first heard about the maps we were a little skeptical – after all, how functional can it possibly be on a small, watch-sized touchscreen? We were very, very wrong. Garmin has managed to create a fantastic solution using automatic zoom. When at the tee box, the Garmin Approach S6 zooms in on the area on the hole map that corresponds to what your typical drive distance is (you put this into the watch when you set it up) automatically. This means that if you’ve put into the watch that your typical drive distance is 300 yards, it will zoom to 300 yards on the fairway to show you where you will typically be landing. There’s also the option to zoom in manually to which area you’d like to view.
Setting up the Garmin Approach S6 is easy. You have to do the usual stuff, such as selecting your language and measurement. You also have to input your most common driver distance, as this determines where the map will be zoomed in on depending on whether you are on a par four or par five hole.
You charge the Approach S6 via a USB cable into your computer. We’d also recommend that you create a Garmin Connect user account and download Garmin Express so that you can record and keep track of your Golfing stats.
Easy to use
The Garmin Approach S6 has a colour touchscreen and 4 buttons, which make using the watch a breeze since the interface is incredibly intuitive and the display such high quality. The watch itself is very slim and lightweight, making it very comfortable to wear during your swing.
The Approach S6 is like all good Golf GPS watches and allows you to check yardages at a quick glance to the front, middle and back of the green. But it also provides you with a lot more…
The Approach S6 makes it possible for you to also preview, hole by hole, any area of the course you want. This allows you to view any doglegs and hazards before you play the hole (or even while you’re at home not even playing Golf!)
Our verdict (5/5)
The Garmin Approach S6 is one of the most expensive watches we’ve tested and although this is the case, we have found it to be the best GPS watch currently available on the market for Golfing. The fact that it has a high quality touchscreen display that shows precise yardages as well as overhead maps makes it similar to having a handheld GPS unit, but with the convenience of it being packaged in a watch.
It’s also great because unlike some other Golf GPS watches, you don’t have to pay any additional on-going fees for course and map updates.
The battery life on the Garmin Approach S6 is also fantastic considering how feature-packed it is. So if you’re looking for a premium GPS watch to compliment your Golfing, we’d definitely recommend giving the Approach S6 a go!
We hope you’ve enjoyed our Garmin Approach S6 review and have found it useful.
